Summary

For fifty years, the medical establishment has preached the same rules for losing weight: restrict calories, eat less, and exercise more。 Yet in that time, obesity in the United States has skyrocketed。 So why has this prescription so clearly failed?

Based on twenty years of investigative reporting and interviews with more than a hundred practicing physicians who embrace ketogenic (low-carbohydrate, high-fat) eating as the best formula for health, here bestselling author Gary Taubes puts the keto movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective。 He makes clear the vital misconceptions about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply by eating too much or being sedentary; hormones play the critical role) and uses collected clinical experience from the medical community to provide much-needed practical advice on healthy eating。

A groundbreaking manifesto for the fight against obesity and diabetes, in The Case for Keto, Taubes reveals why the established rules about eating healthfully might be the wrong approach to weight loss for most people, and how ketogenic diets can help many of us achieve and maintain a healthy weight for life。

The Case for Keto is well-documented。 It shows how much time and energy went into researching the Ketogenic diet。 Gary Taubes presents the facts well。 This book is an excellent read for dietitian and layman alike。 I highly recommend it。I won this book in a goodreads giveaway。

This is an excellent book for anyone to read, regardless of whether you struggle with obesity and/or metabolic syndrome。 Whatever your scenario or circumstances in life regarding your health, I highly recommend that you read this book and consider what the author has to say about the ketogenic eating pattern。 It is clear, as in his other books, that he did his research and considers all opinions aside from his own。This book, like "Why We Get Fat," helped me develop more compassion for people who This is an excellent book for anyone to read, regardless of whether you struggle with obesity and/or metabolic syndrome。 Whatever your scenario or circumstances in life regarding your health, I highly recommend that you read this book and consider what the author has to say about the ketogenic eating pattern。 It is clear, as in his other books, that he did his research and considers all opinions aside from his own。This book, like "Why We Get Fat," helped me develop more compassion for people who struggle with obesity because it helped me see obesity as an onset condition that is largely uncorrelated with people's exercise habits and physics。 That was the most significant takeaway for me。 。。。more

Excellent book that makes an honest well-researched case for low carb eating。 Author eviscerates the conventional advice to limit fats in your diet。 He explains that it's the sugar and starch, not the fat, in food that is harming us。 Excellent book that makes an honest well-researched case for low carb eating。 Author eviscerates the conventional advice to limit fats in your diet。 He explains that it's the sugar and starch, not the fat, in food that is harming us。 。。。more

Gary Taubes is a very good author。 I've read several of his books and it's always a pleasure。 Nothing revolutionary in this book but it's just well organized, balanced, and well written argument。 Gary Taubes is a very good author。 I've read several of his books and it's always a pleasure。 Nothing revolutionary in this book but it's just well organized, balanced, and well written argument。 。。。more

Less convincing than previous bookThis is a shorter summary book of "why we get fat" and I found it less convincing。 It has fewer footnotes and only added some anecdotes。 I wanted more data。 Hopefully clinicians will study keto more and then I'll read another book by this author, who does have an engaging style。 Less convincing than previous bookThis is a shorter summary book of "why we get fat" and I found it less convincing。 It has fewer footnotes and only added some anecdotes。 I wanted more data。 Hopefully clinicians will study keto more and then I'll read another book by this author, who does have an engaging style。 。。。more

The author makes a case for the Keto diet, which is a low carb, high saturated fat diet。 He makes a strong case, and it seems to work well, particularly for those who struggle with weight or have diabetes。 He makes the point that people metabolize their food differently。 This diet particularly works for those who struggle with excessive weight gain。 It made me wonder about whether this diet should be followed if people do not have a propensity to gain weight easily。

Lighter on the science than Good Calories, Bad Calories。 But very practical and clear。

I highly recommend this book。 Keto is basically low carb。 My husband and I have been eating low carb for 20 years, but the book explained a lot about this type of eating that I didn't know, and that makes it easier for me to keep eating that way。For example: High blood sugar is bad for many systems in your body (blood vessels, nerves, kidneys)。 That's why diabetes has to be treated。 I learned from Taubes that when you eat a meal with a lot of carbs, your insulin level rises to deal with the bloo I highly recommend this book。 Keto is basically low carb。 My husband and I have been eating low carb for 20 years, but the book explained a lot about this type of eating that I didn't know, and that makes it easier for me to keep eating that way。For example: High blood sugar is bad for many systems in your body (blood vessels, nerves, kidneys)。 That's why diabetes has to be treated。 I learned from Taubes that when you eat a meal with a lot of carbs, your insulin level rises to deal with the blood sugar (naturally)。 Your body can live on either carbs or fats, but not both at once。 So to clear the decks for burning the newly arrived carbs, insulin ALSO tells any leftover fats from the last meal that are still kicking around in your system to be put into storage as fat。 It's not eating fat that makes you fat - it's your body dealing with too many carbs。If you eat lots of carbs, your body will assume more are coming, and as your blood sugar drops (after the insulin kicks in), you'll crave more carbs。 If you simply don't eat carbs (so your insulin stays low), your body will slowly and steadily convert stored fat to use as energy。 Even marathoners have enough fat stores for at least a week, so your body has no reason to scream, "Feed me!!!" People who aim to lose weight by cutting out carbs can usually do it without watching calories - you eat until you're full, then stop。 Oddly enough, after reading that bit, I realized I can actually go for 12+ hours without eating (dinner to a late breakfast) without feeling hunger, as long as I don't have carbs for dinner。Taubes also looks at a lot of "accepted wisdom" in light of medical research from the last 50-60 years, e。g。, whether you need any carbs (never mind the huge amount prescribed by the govt's current "food pyramid"), whether fat causes heart disease (no), and whether weight loss is simply a matter of willing oneself to eat fewer calories than one expends (no)。The book includes lists of foods that are low-carb。 The biggest "no"s are processed grains and sugars。 There is a case study or two of people who started by cutting out a few high-carb items (sugary drinks) and then worked their way up to hardly any carbs in their daily intake。Based on my own experience, low carb is the most efficient and easiest way to lose weight。 I lost 40 lbs。 on a mostly veggie diet (Pritikin)。 It was torture: constant hunger, and counting calories meticulously。 I switched to Atkins / low carb not long after, and it's been easy to keep the weight off。 。。。more
